HUS Patient Tower

New life for an old building

Client: HUS
Year: 2009 – 2015

The 15-storey “Patient Tower” has dominated Meilahti Campus ever since its completion in the 1960s. It has also become an elementary part of the greater Helsinki City landscape.

The facades and interiors of the building were fully renovated during the project. Only the concrete columns and other bearing structures were left untouched. All technical installations were modernized and an extra floor was added on top of the building to meet the requirements of a modern hospital.

The total gross area of the project was over 35 00 square metres and the cost 90 million Euros. The design work was carried out in collaboration with SARC Architects. Images: Kuvatoimisto Kuvio Oy, Anders Portman
